Balancing design with performance

Flooding this London property with natural light was central to the client’s vision, with expansive glazing proposed to maximise views and enhance the sense of openness. However, the extent of glazing exceeded the limits set out in Building Regulation Guidance, presenting a clear compliance challenge.

Rather than compromising the design intent, we undertook area-weighted U-value calculations to explore alternative routes. This approach enabled us to offset the increased glazing by enhancing the thermal performance of other building elements, maintaining regulatory compliance without diluting the architectural vision.

With the average cost of energy bills constantly increasing; it is imperative to consider the future energy needs of all our designs from the earliest stages.
